The Phoenix was an ancient mythical bird said to be as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold plumage and a melodious cry. The Phoenix symbolises rebirth, peaceful and prosperous times, harmony and longevity. It is one of the four celestial guardians of the directions (the South) and represents the union of yin and yang.
Only one Phoenix lived at any one time.
As the end of life approached for the Phoenix, it made a nest of aromatic branches, frankincense and spices and then set it on fire, and from the ashes was born a new Phoenix. According to Chinese legend, the Phoenix appeared rarely and only to mark the beginning of a new era. It was a symbol of high virtue, grace, power and prosperity.
